Etymology and Origin

The word ''Tsundere'' is a combination of two Japanese terms:

• "Tsuntsun" (ツンツン) – Which means irritable. This part points towards the hostile part of characters' attitude.
• "Deredere" (デレデレ) – Which means loving. This part points towards the loving or gentle part of characters' attitude.

The first mention of this term was observed in the early 2000s in online ''otaku'' communities, and was later popularized in various different internet forums and visual novels. The premise of this archtype is primarily about an aggressive female character that starts out hostile towards their love interest while actively harboring feelings towards them. As the story progresses, the character opens up more and more until the gentle side of their starts to show.
