Non-Human characters are fictional beings that are fundamentally not human, but have traits similar to them. These traits can be intelligence, behavior, appearance, reasoning or other human-like traits. These characters are present in various media, literature, mythology and video games, where they are commonly used for world building or exploring social concepts.
Origins and History
The concept itself traces back to ancient civilizations, where these characters frequently appeared in folklore or religion. In these folklores, gods, animals and spirits were often tied to a specific moral values, which was then personified.
- Egyptian Mythology - Various gods in Egyptian mythology contained Non-Human themes, such as Anubis or Bastet.
- Japanese Folklore - Various supernatural entities from Japanese Folklore contain these themes as well, such as Kitsune or Tengu.
These concepts were present in the medieval ages, especially in literature, where various beings such as dragons, talking animals or demons appeared in various stories, often teaching about moral values as well.
Popular Culture
During the Victorian era, Non-human characters started appearing in children stories, which quickly gained a lot of popularity.
