Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, Sadomasochism (BDSM) refers to a set of sexual and contractual practices that involve pain, restraint, erotic humiliation, or the enactment of various sexual fantasies. Sadomasochistic practices are based on an agreement between two parties (the dominant and the submissive). BDSM encompasses a wide variety of practices.
Domination and submission is a game of behaviors and desires in which one person wishes to be dominated by one or more others for erotic and sexual purposes. It can be intensely physical, sometimes even involving sadomasochism. Individuals who choose the dominant role are called dominants (for males) or dominatrices (or even mistresses, for females), while those who choose the submissive role are called submissives (both boys and girls). Individuals can also switch roles during play (switch). It's a consensual exchange between partners, based on trust, communication, and mutual respect, in which partners can explore each other emotionally. The establishment of a safe word is often required so that the submissive can stop the exchange and let the dominant know that itβs too much.
Origin
The term sadomasochism is derived from the words sadism and masochism. These words come from the names of the Marquis de Sade and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Although Sade and Sacher-Masoch are respectively linked to sadism and masochism, the scenes depicted in Sade's works do not represent contemporary BDSM practices, especially when it comes to consent.
Psychiatrist Richard von Krafft-Ebing and sexologist Havelock Ellis used and popularized the terms masochism and sadism within the medical community.
In 1905, Sigmund Freud described "sadism" and "masochism" in his work Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality. This led to the first use of the compound term sadomasochism by Viennese psychoanalyst Isidor Sadger in their work Γber den sado-masochistischen Komplex ("On the Sadomasochistic Complex") in 1913.

Finally, in 1967, Deleuze published a presentation of Sacher-Masoch in which he wrote, "Sadomasochism is one of those poorly constructed names, a semiological monster." He further clarified that in the event of an encounter, "everyone flees or perishes".
Popular Culture
Although it's a practice from a relatively underground world, BDSM has grown in popularity over time.
Films / TV Shows:
- Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). This novel (and its film adaptation) greatly popularized BDSM among a wide audience by depicting a dominant/submissive relationship.
- Secretary (2002). This film highlights a BDSM relationship between a secretary and her boss, exploring power dynamics in an original way.
Music:
- Rihanna- S&M (2010). In this track, the pop star openly addresses the pleasure linked to pain and the games of domination, echoing the BDSM universe.
- Rammstein - Ich tu dir weh (2009). This piece by the German band explores themes of pain and pleasure through its lyrics and video in an explicit context that recalls BDSM imagery.
Memes & Internet Culture:
- Social Medias - The use of a "safe word" has been widely popularized, especially in humorous contexts.
- Memes - Family Guy image where Lois dresses in leather (the attire most often associated with BDSM).
