Lesbianism is the exclusive romantic and sexual attraction between women. This attraction is also referred to as female homosexuality or sapphism.
The term "lesbian" is used to designate a homosexual woman. As an adjective, "lesbian" is used to describe an object or activity related to love between lesbians or women associated with them.
History
The history of lesbians refers both to the history of women having romantic and sexual relationships with each other and to the history of a social and cultural identity that is not limited to mere female homosexuality.

Evolving in lesbophobic societies that repress them, lesbians have nevertheless managed to create and maintain spaces and forms of sociability, as well as a distinct culture, particularly in literature. They have also gained, in some countries, the right to marry and raise children, while contributing to the political emancipation of all women.
Popular Culture
Lesbianism has often been represented through Popular Culture. The risk being that it can be used as a selling point, given that lesbians are a fairly common fantasy among heterosexual men. However, some works are sincere and genuinely depict the love that exists between women.

A smaller portion consists of genuinely lesbian characters designed to be interacted with by women rather than men. The "lesbian" tag is often associated with the "Futanari" tag.
