It describes personality type that is sweet and affectionate on the outside, but obsessive and possessive to the point of violence towards the person they love. These characters are mostly used in romantic and horror genres due to the severe obsession, which can lead to a dark conclusion.

Etymology and Origin

The word ''Yandere'' is a combination of two Japanese terms:

• Yanderu (病んでる) – Which points towards mental illness or derangement.

• Deredere (デレデレ) – Which means loving. This part points towards the loving or gentle part of characters' attitude.

The term ''Yandere'' shares the same roots as the term Tsundere. The first mention of this term was observed in the early 2000s in online ''otaku'' communities, and was later popularized in various different internet forums and visual novels. In most cases, the premise of this archtype is about Yandere character acting affectionate, lovingly and gently, which eventually turns into deep obsession, possesiveness and violence, if the character sees a rival or things don't go the way they want.

Yandere characters are present in many forms of media, from anime, light novels to games, especially in Japan. They are loved by their deep and twisted affection, absolute loyalty and psychological aspects that make them different.

• Future Diary (Yuno Gasai) - One of the most well known Yandere in Japanese media. Yuno will do anything for the person she loves, resorting to violence and killing without a second thought.
• Elfen Lied (Lucy / Kaede) - Lucy is a genetically modified girl that has special abilities. She has strong violent tendencies, and the only thing she cares about is her childhood friend, for who she will do anything.

• Yandere Simulator - PC simulation game where you play as a Yandere character, with the goal of making your love interest fall in love with you. Even if it means eliminating all of your rivals.
• Doki Doki Literature Club! - A one of a kind psychological horror game, where Yandere character Monika takes ''control'' of the game's code in order to eliminate her love rivals.
