Gay refers to a homosexual man, meaning his romantic and sexual attraction is directed toward other men.

The category of gay identity, conceived as an innate disposition specific to certain men, was constructed by 19th-century medicine and later claimed by gay men themselves. Gay male communities share cultural practices, built, for example, through common spaces such as gay bars.

Etymology

In the 17th century, the term "gay" was used to talk about matters related to entertainment and immoral pleasures, before becoming associated with prostitution in the 19th century.
