Etymology and Origin

The word Horror comes from the Latin horrere, which means "to shudder" or "to tremble", having a direct relation with the genre's core purpose, which is to create an uneasing sensation, as stated before. Regarding the origin of the term, the first time it is registered as a genre, it is in the 18th Century with the rise of Gothic fiction in literature. At first, Horror was merely focused on psychological and paranormal topics as the central role of it, but as time went by, it evolved and covered the wide variety that it was mentioned before, creating their own niches within the genre.

Pop Culture

Since it is a really popular genre in different works, it has been really present in Popular Culture, at first it might be considered as a kind of niche, but after the late 20th Century with the boom created by the Slasher sub-genre in Hollywood (with movies like: The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).), it became totally mainstream and started to be in a constant evolution after that.
