Elves appeared in folklore and legends and fantasy literature, during different ages and various cultures. Their portraying and characteristics often are different based on the culture, sometimes being shown as mischevious creatures and some others being long-lived beings with magical powers, connection with nature and with natural beauty that resembles the more common and modern representation of popular European literature.

Etymology
The word Elf comes from Old English รฆlf and Old Norse รกlfr, both referring to a higher and supernatural being that transcends from humanity. Also, it can be considered a certain origin from Proto-Germanic with the word albiz, which means "white" or "shinning", having a direct meaning towards their connection with light and magic. Across time and ages, the concept evolved constantly; with origins in Germanic and Scandinavian folklore, and later getting to a concept closer to the modern definition of it in medieval fantasy, getting a stronger focus in their connection with nature, forests and similar characteristics to fairies.
Pop Culture
As part of our culture, Elves can be considered a pillar of modern fantasy. Initially present in literature, mainly in J.R.R. Tolkien works that also had a movie adaptation, becoming one of the most popular versions of the race in the mainstream. In a more niche context, they are also an important figure in tabletop RPGs, like Dungeons & Dragons, where elves are one of the most popular playable races. In interactive media, we can find them in several Fantasy videogame franchises, like Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls, adding a deeper layer to their usual representation, creating sub-races with their own characteristics and lore. And lastly but not less important, Elves can be found in modern folklore, such as Santa's helpers in Christmas tales.
