Smut is a label used to describe media, such as movies, art and literature. These media focus heavily on explicit, adult material, and their goal is to draw out arousal from the audience. This was not the case from the beginning, as the earliest records mention that this word was used to refer to dirt or stain. The meaning has since changed and its previous meaning is mostly forgotten.
Etymology and Origin
The exact origin of this term is unknown, but its earliest mention comes from the 17th century, where it referred to dirt or stain. In the 19th century, The word ''Smut'' had taken on a different meaning, and since then, it has been used to refer to indecent or obscene material. During those times, smut was considered a scandalous and taboo subject. Due to this, many authors faced censorship. One notable mention is Fanny Hill (1748) by John Cleland. This book was written by John Cleland while he was in prison. Now, the book is considered as one of the most prosecuted and banned books in history.
Popular Culture
Today, the term is mostly associated with genres that focus on heavily explicit sexual themes or encounters. The internet provided a perfect environment for such content to spread, and we are seeing increasingly high amount of media that focus on this genre. Be it in pornography, games, art, music, movies or even AI companions. Public perception of smut has also since changed. What used to be a taboo subject is now something that people can comfortably speak about.
Popular literature:
- Fanny Hill by John Cleland - Written in 1748, this novel was a target of heavy censorship and is considered by many as the most infamous example of smut literature. This novel was written by its author while in prison.
- Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence - Written in 1928, this novel became infamous for its vulgar treatment of sexuality and its rather strong opinions on social standards, which led to many legal battles over its publication.
- Justine by the Marquis de Sade - Written in 1791, this work has received mixed reception due to its extreme portrayal of sexuality. Despite that, this book has been a subject of studies, highlighting its historical importance.
Usage in Crushon.AI
