Mafia
The term mafia refers to Sicilian organized crime; the name "mafia," originating from Tuscany, appeared in Sicily in the mid-19th century.
In its broadest sense, mafia groups all forms of organized crime, regardless of where they operate in the world. So we can hear about American, Russian, Irish, Bulgarian, Italian, Bosnian, Serbian, Turkish, Albanian, Corsican, Chinese, Japanese, Moroccan, Mexican mafias, for example.
Origin
The term "mafia" became popular in the 1860s and first appeared in 1863. In his dictionary of the Sicilian dialect, Traina notes that it is a recent word, imported by the Piedmontese who came to the island with Garibaldi during the Italian unification, which resulted in Sicily's annexation to Italy in 1861 (under Piedmontese rule, see Cavour, the Expedition of the Thousand). Vincenzo Mortillaro (1876) also attributes an exogenous origin to the word mafia, considering it an imported term used by the Piedmontese as a synonym for the Camorra in Naples.
This word is therefore not of Sicilian origin but comes from Northern Italy. It originates specifically from Tuscany, where it means "misery." Originally, the word had two "f" (maffia), but upon arriving in Sicily, it lost one. What the Piedmontese defined as "misery" referred to life in Sicily (a poor region); however, the Sicilians transformed it into a source of pride, a "superiority of spirit," which gave the word a new meaning in Sicilian. The mafia thus emerged as a rejection by Sicilian society of the prejudices and superiority brought from the North with Italian unification.

The theme of the mafia has been explored in numerous popular works. It has been portrayed in a very serious and representative manner or from a lighter perspective in romance works. It has mostly been romanticized by works found on Wattpad where the mafia is depicted in a fantasized way, reduced to the wealth acquired rather than the dangers of this criminal world.

- The Godfather (1972). American mafia movie adapted from the novel of the same name.
- The Sopranos (1999). American Drama TV series about Tony Soprano, an Italian-American gangster.
Literature
- Italian Mafia (2023). Novel written by Emma Bardiau. About a young woman who is the only daughter of the Neapolitan Mafia boss. She has to seduce and kill the Russian Mafia boss.
- Bound by Honor - The Mafia Chronicles (2022). Novel written by Cora Reilly. About Aria Scuderi who's betrothed to Luca to ensure peace between their two families.
Video Games
- Mafia (2002). A video game series about the Mafia world, with sequels still ongoing.
- Grand Theft Auto III (2001). An installment in the popular video game series. It follows the life of a man living in Liberty City, interacting with criminal organizations, including the Mafia.
