The term ''Cartoon'' comes from Italian ''Cartone'' which translates to a large piece of paper. During the Renaissance period, this term referred to a full-scale preparatory drawings for various types of artworks. In the 19th century, this term evolved in the English language to describe satirical illustrations, especially those that were found in the various magazines / newspapers. In the 20th century, this term has evolved yet again and now it also describes animated moving pictures that were drawn frame by frame.

Cartoons are now firmly rooted in various cultures all around the world, with the audience being adults and children alike. The more satirical and humorous approach caters more towards the adult audience, while childrens shows are aimed towards younger audience.
