Etymology
The word comedy comes from the Greek "komoidia", which is a merge between komos (festival) and aeidein (to sing). It was referred to common festive songs that were performed during Dionisyan festivals. Comedy was one of the main dramatic genres along with tragedy.
In Medieval and Renaissance times, comedy evolved from varied dramatic theater and folk plays, being mainly part of scenic and acting arts. Later in modern-comedy, we've got new ways of comedic expression, like stand-up, television and cinema, getting to new sub-genres like slapstick, situational humor and dark humor.
