Bullying is a form of persecution that involves repeatedly engaging in hostile actions or words to demoralize and psychologically weaken the victim. It can occur in schools, the workplace, online or be sexual in nature.
Bullying can take the form of psychological harassment, such as insults or threats, or physical assaults against one or more individuals who may be discriminated against based on their skin color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or other differences such as physical or mental abilities.
In the most severe cases, harassment can lead to post-traumatic stress disorders and even suicidal actions in the victim.
Reception and Criticism
The normalization and romanticization of bullying is controversial. In many pop culture works, we see the bully falling in love with their victim, or harassing their victim because of their own feelings.
People who enjoy this type of romance defend it, saying it's a good way to develop a character, show emotional depth, and therefore make a story deeper. They also point out that fiction isn't necessarily an accurate and realistic portrayal of real life. But those most reluctant to accept bully tropes believe it's wrong to normalize such destructive relationships and make them look good in the eyes of younger, more impressionable viewers.
