Fairytale, sometimes called a folk tale, is a subgenre of the tale. In this type of literature, supernatural or magical elements appear, including magical operations and miraculous events meant to enchant the reader—or the listener, in the case of a storytelling session—generally drawn from folklore. Most of the stories belonging to this literary genre were passed down orally before being collected and transcribed in writing in the 17th century, which led to their form and content becoming relatively fixed.
Origin
Fairtytales are very ancient, and some of them (Beauty and the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin for example) may date back to Prehistory. This would make them even older than the earliest known written texts. They have been transmitted orally since the Proto-Indo-European period. However, this theory remains controversial, as other researchers consider these stories to be more recent. This type of tale has, in fact, undergone a very long-term evolution.
