Mythology
Mythology (from the Greek μυθολογία / muthología, from μῦθος / mûthos, "word," and λόγος / lógos, "discourse") is either a collection of myths related to a civilization, a religion, or a particular theme, or the study of these myths. Researchers who study mythologies are called "mythologists."
Understood as a collection of myths, the concept of mythology is generally used to describe sets of narratives and divine, human, or monstrous figures interwoven within the religious systems of ancient civilizations or traditional societies, distant in space or time.
Understood as the study of myths, mythology also dates back to Antiquity, as the ancient Greeks quickly developed a critical perspective on their own myths, leading to interpretations aimed at realistic or moralizing reinterpretations through currents such as Euhemerism and the practice of allegorical commentary. However, it was only in the 19th century that mythological studies became a scientific discipline, within the context of the development of social sciences, particularly anthropology. It was also during this period that comparative mythology emerged, initially modeled on comparative linguistics. From this evolution arose the main currents of mythological studies in the 20th and 21st centuries, such as ritualist interpretation, psychoanalytical or structuralist approaches.
