Religion is a set of beliefs that define the relationship between humans and the sacred, a recognition by human beings of a higher principle or being (which some may call God). The most popular and widespread religions are Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and Hinduism.
Etymology
Latin literature from Antiquity has passed down several etymologies for the word "religion". The most frequently cited today are relegere, meaning "to reread" or "to go over again in order to choose anew", and religare, meaning "to bind".
