Religion is a set of beliefs that define the relationship between humans and the sacred, a recognition by human beings of a higher principle or being (which some may call God). Religion can be understood as the ways of seeking — and possibly finding — answers to humanity’s deepest questions. It can be personal or communal, private or public, connected to politics or seeking to distance itself from it. It can also be expressed through the definition and practice of worship, teachings, spiritual exercises, and social behaviors.
The most popular and widespread religions are Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Judaism, and Hinduism.
Etymology
Latin literature from Antiquity has passed down several etymologies for the word "religion". The most frequently cited today are relegere, meaning "to reread" or "to go over again in order to choose anew", and religare, meaning "to bind".
