Cheating is the act of a husband or wife violating their vow of fidelity, of sharing, and having sexual relations with someone other than their spouse to whom they made this vow. Commonly, it is also referred to as infidelity and adultery. Cheating therefore implies not only an extramarital relationship but also that the society and context in which it occurs require sexual exclusivity between spouses.
Etymology and Origin
"Cheating" takes its roots from the term "cheat". It first appeared in the early 15th century from the old French term "escheat" that referred to the reversion of property to a feudal lord in the absence of a direct heir. "Cheat" then evolved with time to mean "deception" or "fraud". It wasn't until the 20th century that "cheating" began to be used to refer to sexual infidelity.
