Hero
The term Hero refers to a fictional or existing person that gained some recognition for their qualities, historical acts or achievements, often they are described as people with noble traits. Historically, their most identifying traits are their outstanding acts for the benefit of others, and how they behave towards justice and fairness. Culturally and historically, the term has been in constant evolution, coming from mythological warriors and nowadays with individuals that inspire with their selfless actions. In reality or fiction, heroes are always the embodiment of bravery and justice.
Etymology
The word Hero comes from Greek hērōs (ἥρως), a term that was used to refer to demigods or people with exceptional strength. In Greek mythology, the heroes were the main characters of countless stories, being immortalized by these legends and traditions by generations until present day. As the term evolved, the definition did also, reaching to present time, where heroism in fictional and real-world definition, means a character known by their positive impact on their society.
Popular Culture
Heroes are a defining and really important figure in classical and recent fiction works in our popular culture. From classical literature figures like King Arthur and Oddyseus to the present day where we find superheroes like Spider-Man in comics and movies or Son-Goku in the anime scene. Also we can find some defying to the usual canon of heroes, with characters like Deadpool or Jack Sparrow, being part of a sub-group called Anti-Heroes. Also, in modern fiction, the Hero's Journey is a very usual trope, present in a vast variety of fictional works, like movies, with Luke Skywalker in Star Wars or Neo in Matrix, or videogames, where most of the RPG main characters also follow this trope, in games like Monster Hunter or Destiny, where you as the main character become the hero as the story progress.
