Sci-Fi
Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) is a narrative genre focused on futuristic, speculative, and imaginative topics, it often incorporates advanced technology, space travel, artificial intelligence, and different extraterrestrial species. Sci-Fi narratives can have different variations. They can be written from hard science fiction, prioritizing scientific accuracy and focusing on any form of technological progress, to soft science fiction, which focuses on societal and character-driven narratives, sometimes even adding a certain political undertone.
Etymology
Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) as a genre has its first works in the beginning of 20th century, with a focus on speculation and technological progress, as well as utopian social structures. The term was first used and popularized by Hugo Gernsback, who initially called it Scientifiction in 1916 and used the term Science Fiction as we know it nowadays in 1929, and with no specific register of it, lately in mid 20th century, it started to be known as "Sci-Fi" . Nowadays, this genre could cover a wide range of subgenres by itself.
Popular Culture
Science Fiction (Sci-Fi), might be considered as one of the strongest genres in general, from movies to series and books, leading to a strong influence even to current technological advances. It has a big influence on our global Pop Culture and its own evolution is paired with our own evolution and progress, becoming an important part of our own daily lives.
Evolution and ages can be divided into 4 main key points:
- The Golden Age of Sci-Fi (1930s–1950s) – This started with some writers that might be considered complete visionaries like Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, and Robert Heinlein, who might be considered as the responsible figures to set the foundation towards a bigger impact on the genre.
- Hollywood's Sci-Fi Boom (1970s–1980s) – There were some blockbusters like Star Wars (1977) and Blade Runner (1982), and series like Star Trek (1966) that brought sci-fi to massified audiences and brought the genre to the mainstream.
- Cyberpunk & AI (1990s–2000s) – works like The Matrix (1999) and Ghost in the Shell (1995) had a different vision that set a new mindset towards future works for the genre, exploring dystopian realities and bringing up subjects that are still being discussed nowadays, such as Artificial Intelligence.
- The Streaming & Franchise Era (2010s–Present) – Sci-Fi once again experiments considerable evolution and growth with interconnected franchises and extended narratives that surpassed the usual restraints of the genre or even their own media source (Marvel Cinematic Universe, Dune, Star Trek reboots) and original streaming series (Black Mirror, The Expanse).
Sci-Fi is always having a constant evolution, being even more than just a genre of entertainment, since it even shaped in some way our own evolution and advances.
