A detective is a private law investigator, meaning a person with a private law status who, as a professional, conducts research, investigations, and surveillance.
This status of private law investigator (which is not a designation or a title but a legal and social status) is also shared by various other professions that have no connection to private investigators, particularly in the context of administrative, civil, criminal, or social procedures.
The profession is, around the world, recognized, ignored, tolerated, or prohibited depending on the legislation of the country in question, as well as its ability to respect the Rights of the Defense, individual freedoms, and the freedom of trade and industry.
